Bids Sought for Coating of WA Bridge

The City of Tacoma, WA, will accept bids Jan. 4, 2011, for rehabilitation and painting of the East Lincoln Avenue Bridge.

The city estimates the total contract at between $3.5 million and $4.5 million.

This project involves rehabilitating the 81-year-old through-truss bridge over the Puyallup River. The structure is 470 feet long and 30 feet wide.

Scope of Work

The project will generally consist of:

  • Replacing the concrete bridge deck for spans 2 and 3;
  • Providing a modified concrete overlay for spans 1 and 4;
  • Rehabilitating or replacing the bridge bearings;
  • Other small bridge repair items;
  • Removing all existing paint from the steel structure; and
  • Painting all steel elements.

The project includes abrasive blast-cleaning and recoating structural steel surfaces. The existing coatings contain lead; containment is required. SSPC-QP 2 certification is also required.

The project also includes performing additional repairs. The bridge was previously rehabilitated in 1944.
