East Bay (CA) Municipal Utility District, will accept bids April 27 for painting, lead abatement and related work on the Mokelumne Aqueducts—a project estimated at $6 million to $8 million.

The project—officially the Mokelumne Aqueducts Phase 8 – Slough Crossings Projects—involves abrasive blast-cleaning and recoating of the exterior surfaces of four sections on the aqueduct, a system of three large-diameter steel pipelines that transport water about 90 miles from the Sierra foothills to treatment facilities and raw water reservoirs.

The project involves coatings removal and recoating sections of the Aqueducts at Indian Slough in Contra Costa County and Trapper Slough, Holt Bend, and Black Slough in San Joaquin County to prevent corrosion. This work is part of a periodic maintenance program to safeguard the structural integrity of these vital water transmission pipelines.

Scope of Work

The project includes recoating 6,236 linear feet of 65-inch-diameter piping, 5,581 linear feet of 69-inch-diameter piping, and 5,998 linear feet of 89.5-inch-diameter piping (17,815 linear feet total). Pipe supports, appurtenances and related work are required, and the project runs over land and water.

SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certification are required. The existing coatings contain lead; Class 1A containment (SSPC-Guide 6) is required.
