Washington State’s Pend Oreille County will accept bids July 11 for rehabilitation of the Ione Bridge—a project valued at up to $4.5 million, including about $1.5 million in coatings work.

The project involves rehabilitating the 15-span, 830-foot-deck truss bridge over the Pend Oreille River, in the extreme northeastern corner of the state.

 Deana Edmiston

The Ione Bridge, completed in the 1930s, was last rehabilitated in the 1960s.

The bridge was completed in the 1930s and last received major maintenance in the late 1960s.

Coatings Work

The two-phase project includes cleaning and coating a total of about 97,770 square feet of structural steel, grid deck, railing, post, pile tie, and expansion joint cover surfaces and 20 bearing assemblies, as well as cleaning, sealing and caulking 500 linear feet of pack rust. All painting, cleaning and related work will be performed in the second phase of the project.

The existing coatings contain lead; containment will be required. The project also includes shop-priming and field-finishing new steel, and installing 450 square feet of carbon fiber pile jacketing.
