Water-Based Epoxy Controls Static

Sherwin-Williams has launched what it calls the industry’s first static-control water-based epoxy floor coating system.

Developed by the company’s Protective and Marine Coatings business, the General Polymers 3425E Static Control Water-Based Epoxy Coating and 3424 Conductive Water-Based Epoxy Primer are designed to provide better performance and environmental attributes than conductive, solvent-based epoxy coating systems.

Features and Applications

3425E is a high-solids, two-component epoxy. It is designed as a coating or topcoat over standard flooring systems, to provide a static dissipative flooring system in the range of 106 to 109 ohms resistance. The coating is formulated to provide exceptional resistance to wear, abrasion and chemical attack from most common alkalis and acids.

Static control floor coating

3425E is recommended for use in computer rooms, circuit board assembly areas, hangars and areas where highly sensitive electronic equipment is used.

The product also can be used as a conductive coating in the range of 25,000 to 106 ohms resistance when applied over the 3424 Conductive Water-Based Epoxy Primer. Conductive flooring is required in flammable material handling areas, black powder storage areas, and other areas where highly explosive materials are present.

Static Dissipation Testing

Sherwin-Williams said the water-based system had performed better at static dissipation than solvent-based systems during testing. The company also called the coating breathable, making it suitable for older concrete floors or areas where moisture has been an issue.

The manufacturer says the primer and coating are low odor, easy to apply and clean up, and offer drying and curing times comparable to those of solvent-based epoxy systems.
