Stainless steel shall be coated when it is exposed to soil under buried conditions, also when exposed to marine environment,connected to or in contact with metals of different potentials. It is also coated for warning and identification purposes.

Stainless steel coating is compulsory when the surface is exposed to corrosive atmospheres of sulphide, fluoride, chloride or marine atmosphere conditions. Stainless steel also needs to be coated when in direct contact with cupronickel, brass, bronze or other noble alloys of metals.

Buried stainless steel pipes should be coated (tape or paint) when they're electrically continuous with carbon steel and in the same pipeline corridor, not to protect the stainless steel but to decrease the bare surface of the stainless steel that would act as a cathode in relation to the carbon steel pipes. Recommendations are not for a sophisticated coating but any normal coating for buried pipe or normal tape.

-Painting is mandatory if it is to be insulated, regardless the process temperature. Otherwise, painting is optional, depending on cost and risk ranks for bare stainless steel piping/equipment in offshore and marine environment opertaing near 50-60 C.
